Department of Urdu Language and Literature
Just like Turkish, Urdu too is the language that bridges Pakistan and
Turkey on a common cultural and linguistic framework. Urdu is the
representative of the Muslims of the Subcontinent and the National
Language of Pakistan. It is a rich source of Muslim culture and
literature and has a precious intellectual heritage. The scope of Urdu
Language and Literature courses in Pak Turk Educational Institutions
covers the following objectives:
- teaching Urdu from starter to advanced level through graded materials,
- developing students’ knowledge and insight on the cultural and
linguistic heritage of Urdu as a National and Regional Language,
- developing students’ knowledge on renowned Pakistani writers and of
world literature translated into Urdu,
- encouraging and preparing students for various intramural and
extracurricular activities to promote the spoken and written use of Urdu
through debates, panels, declamation contests, poetry – prose
competitions, mushaira and the like,
- providing the groundwork for students’ to read a number of works per
year from Urdu literature written in different genres,
- initiating and supervising written translation works from Urdu to
English and Turkish for cultural exchange,
- providing the groundwork for students to be aware of the programs
related to Urdu Language and Literature broadcasted on television, radio
or the Internet,
- providing the groundwork for students to be aware of the literature
magazines and to develop the habit of reading at least one daily
newspaper in Urdu,
- providing the groundwork for students to take care to use language
properly, correctly and fluently in everyday life.
